Teacher John Chen Dong  was raised in a family of accomplished musicians. His father was the principal oboist in the Shaanxi Symphony Orchestra and his mother was an opera vocalist. He completed his systematic music education at Xi’an Conservatory of Music and Central Conservatory of music in Beijing, China. 

Mr. Chen is an established concert pianist and has worked with orchestras in Singapore and China. He gave his first successful piano recital at the age of 15 at concert hall.

 

Mr Chen counts the late renowned Austrian pianist Maestro Paul Budura-Skoda as one of his many mentors. In 1995, he was invited by the former conductor of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) Maestro Choo Hoey to successfully premiere the piano concerto《River Run》 (Asia Premiere) by Japanese leading compose Toru Takemitsu with SSO at Victoria Concert Hall in 1995. At that time, Singapore's Straits Times reported the event in a special report.

Mr. Chen was Invited again by Maestro Choo Hoey for series concerts at VCH and other events as concert pianists.​In the meantime, Mr Chen conducted internal training as piano accompanist for SSO pre-audition in purpose to help SSO musicians who was willing to upgrading their seats in Orchestra. In 2017, Xi’an Conservatory of Music ( amla mater) offered Mr Chen a position as the Assistant Conductor and piano accompanist for the youth choir at the conservatory.

 

As a successful music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in classical piano performance and pedagogy. Proven track record of successfully teaching students of all ages and levels, Mr Chen cultivating their musical talents and inspiring a lifelong love of music. Extensive experience as a concert pianist, Mr Chen performing both solo and with renowned ensembles. Committed to promoting classical music and fostering the next generation of musicians.

 

In early 2021, Mr Chen brought his wealth of musical expertise to Asia Music School and joined us as a senior piano instructor.
