Donald Law – Pianist

Hailed as a “highly musical personality” by The Straits Times, Donald Law is a distinguished solo and collaborative pianist known for his expressive performances and technical mastery. A prize winner of numerous national and international competitions, he has gained widespread recognition for his musicality and versatility.

Donald’s accolades include 1st prize at the 7th Lucien Wang Piano Competition (2016) and 2nd prize at the Nanyang International Music Competition (2017), among others. His talents have led him to perform at prestigious summer music festivals and concerts across England, Germany, Italy, Serbia, and Montenegro, where he has shared the stage with renowned international artists in both solo and chamber music performances.

A notable highlight of his career was his performance of Smetana’s Piano Trio in G minor Op. 15, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 in C K. 503, and Piano Concerto No. 17 in G K. 453 as the soloist with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) Wind Ensemble in four concerts, receiving critical acclaim. In 2018, Donald was invited to perform in Ru Gao, China, as part of Musikschule Kirn-Meisenheim-Bad Sobemheim’s cultural exchange programme. He has also played for high-profile events, including a piano recital at the Beijing Kerry Center Hotel for Kerry Oils & Grains Co. Ltd., marking their announcement as a supplier for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Additionally, his participation in the Art of Healing series at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) brought comfort and joy to patients and visitors through his piano recitals at the TTSH Atrium.

Throughout his academic journey, Donald has received numerous scholarships, including the Overseas-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) Undergraduate Scholarship, where he was featured in the scholarship magazine Sparks in an article titled “Let Passion Lead the Way”. He was also awarded the Ngee Ann Kongsi Merit Award and the Tay Chay Bing Bursary. Donald graduated with distinction from NAFA with a Diploma in Music, later earning a First-Class Honours in Bachelor of Music in Performance from the Royal College of Music (RCM) – NAFA. He furthered his studies with a Master of Music at RCM, London, where he was awarded the prestigious Henry Wood Trust Fund. His mentors include Lena Ching, Boris Kraljevic, Ashley Wass, and Dina Parakhina, and he has worked with esteemed pianists such as Ivan Klánsky, Hüseyin Sermet, Noriko Ogawa, and the late Dennis Lee.

Donald’s performances have been regularly reviewed and featured in local newspapers. He actively serves as a juror for piano competitions both locally and internationally and has been invited to conduct masterclasses to share his musical insights and expertise. In 2020, he signed with the KNS Classical label, releasing his solo album Evolution, a testament to his ever-evolving artistry and passion for piano performance.

As a performer and educator, Donald continues to inspire audiences worldwide, dedicated to advancing the art of music through both his performance career and his commitment to nurturing future generations of pianists.
